CUSTOMS RETURNS.

REVIEW FOR YEAR. AUCKLAND SHOWS INCREASE. DECREASE FOR ONE MONTH. . Additional details of the Customs revenue for the year in Auckland and in Southern centres are given hereunder. Motor spirit tax returned £401,876 for the year, as compared with £499,012 in 1931, while tyre tax amounted to £25,097, as compared with £31,069 in 1931. The returns for December show revenue from motor spirit tax as £45,822, which is £1533 less than was collected in the corresponding month of last year. Tyre tax, however, shows a revenue of £2987, as compared with £2208 in December, 1931. From all three sources £2,454,542 was collected during the year and £221,277 during the past month. The corresponding figures for 1931 are £2,134,855 and £237,741, showing increased revenue for the past year, as compared with last, hut a distinct falling off during December. Excise on beer collected during the past month amounted to £11,938, bringing the total for the year to £124,155. Last year £110,494 was collected, of which £16,22(5 came in during December. Figures from the Southern centres, as given by the Press Association, are:— Christchurch.—Restrictions on the importation of tyres, petrol and beer, and the removal in October of the surtax on British goods accounted largely for a decrease of £42,875 in the Christchurch Customs returns for the year ended today. In 1931 receipts were £1,061,297, as against the present year's total of £1,021,422. The tyre duty declined by £35,811, the beer duty by £238, motor spirit tax by £4617 and Customs by E605. Slight increases were recorded in revenue from the meat, dairy produce and honey levies. The receipts for December also revealed a falling off. The total receipts for the month were £84,366, as against £103,034 in December, 1931, and £84,800 last month.

Dunedin.—For the year ended to-day the Customs receipts at Dunedin were, last year's figures being given in parentheses:—Customs dutv, £503,813 18/1 (£551,409); beer "duty, £237,007 (£215,433); tyre tax, £7740 (£10,053); petrol tax, £148,391 2/10 (£154,211). Wellington.—Customs revenue collected at Wellington this month totalled £155,523 0/9, compared with £189,320 18/2 in the corresponding month last year. Beer duty amounted to £0105 7/5, compared with £7900 1/7, and petrol tax £57,905 11/4, compared with £57,028 10/10. The Customs revenue for the 12 months totalled £2,048,097 0/9, compared with £2,203,877 14/G last year, a decrease of £215,180. Petrol' tax amounted to £580,252 11/3, against £532,516 11/11 last year, and beer Juty to £03,597 7/5, against £56,929 13/5.
