DERBY DAY.

SILVER SCORN'S EASY WIN.

VICTORY FOR RED SUN.

KING'S ARCHER IN FORM

The racing at Ellerslie yesterday when the Auckland Racing Club held the third of,the four days' meeting was right up to standard, and in the majority of events the finishes were close. The Great Northern Derby was won very easily by the brilliant filly Siivcr Scorn, who carried the_e6l6urs of her Australian owner, Mr. F. who purchased her after the New Zealand Cup meeting last month for £2000. Her victory yesterday was worth £1300. The A.R.C; Handicap went to Red Sun,, the Trentham-trained gelding winning well. ,

The attendance was 19,000, compared with 18,500 on the corresponding day last year, and the totalisator handled £50,533, against £47,977, an increase of £-050, or 5 per cent. Investments for the three days so far total £144,750, compared with £155,726 10/, a decrease of £10,946 10/, or 7 per cent.

Lady Spy Walks In. There was never any doubt about what would win the > Ellerslie Handicap once the horses turned into the straight. The Olive-trained Lady. Spy was up in the lead at that stage, and, bowling along so easily in front that there did not appear to be any chance of her being caught. As a matter of fact, in the run to the' judge she came right away without any effort and won with her rider, H. Long, sitting still, by seven lengths. Grand Review came from a. good way back in the straight to get second from Transaction, who was third round the home turn. Prolyxo and Landlubber were the leaders for six furlongs, when Landlubber lost his position and faded out. Transaction went a good race all through, but the favourite, Sunny Bachelor, was never sighted. The rider of Azalea, losing a stirrup at the jump off, could not control him in the race, and he finished last but one. A Good Colt. Weatherwise, a two-year-old by Weathervarie, owned by Dr. W. C. Ring, scored a very narrow win in the Midsummer Handicap, after being fourth into the straight. He finished on in great style to wear down Gay Sheila, while Midian, the favourite, was only half a length away. Epigram was very unlucky, as he lost several lengths at the start and looked hopelessly out of the race, but he put in some fine work to finish right on the outside and close up at the judge. He lost at least ten lengths at the start, and his effort afterwards left the impression that had he -jumped out at all well he must have won. Tavern Knight was always one of the leaders till well into the straight, when he failed to finish on. The Hurdlers. With Prince of Orange withdrawn after the horses had done their preliminary and were walking about at the barrier, Captain's Gift breaking down five furlongs 'from home, and Principal falling at the second fence, the interest in; tliQ.Xew Year Hurdles was considerably reduced. 'lhe early leader was Sub-Editor, but along the back Captain's Gift and High Pitch were with him. At the five furlongs post Arcade, who had been in behind the trio, went to the front, while Captain's Gift broke down, and was pulled up. Arcade led High Pitch into the straight, but the leader went right through the last hurdle, although he kept on his feet. High' Pitch then headed him, and went on to win by four lengths. Patutahi finished on and was getting Arcade at every stride, just missing second place by a head. StibEditor was a poor fourth, and Trowbridge next. As the totalisator was closed before Prince of Orange was inspected and not allowed to start, the amount, £1491 10/ invested on him, was not returned to backers. Red Sun Wins Well. The A.K.C. Handicap was a fine betting race, with Great Star the favourite over Concentrate and Speedmint. The winner turned up in the fifth fancy, the Tren-tham-trained Red Sun, who was always in a handy position and was up second approaching the home turn. At this point Trishna was the leader, he having carried the field along from the seven furlongs post. Red Sun soon headed him when the straight was entered, and, battling on well, won by a neck from Speedmint, who came from fifth place at the turn and was finishing strongly to cut Antique* out in the last few strides. Great ' Star, the favourite, was always racing in second or third position once the field had properly settled down,'and he was right in the picture all the way down the straight, but had to be content with fourth place at the judge, although he was less than a length away from the winner. Great Emblem faded right out, but Antique was not quite good enough at the weights. Concentrate trailed the field ' practically all the way, and in the straight made up a bit of ground to finish fifth. Royal Artist and Gay Crest had good positions early, but they did not figure in the finish. The Derby.

The win of Silver Scorn in the Derby was clear-cut. Once A. E. Ellis asked the Silverado filly a question after turning into the straight the issue was never in doubt,, and all the way home Ellis was sitting still and glancing from side to side "just in case." The filly was a good favourite over Gold Trad and La Moderne, and it was a good summing up, as the three filled the leading places. At the start Gold Trail and Silver Scorn were just a trifle slow to move, and witli two furlongs gone the last three were Silver Scorn, Gold Trail and Tout io Mond. Along the back Silver Scorn was taken up on the outside, and with six furlongs to go the order ,was Jonathan, Pillow • Eight,, With Supreme . Ruler, La Moderne and Silver Scorn racing in line next, Silver Scorn being on the outside. Gold Trail was last> and she went to move up, but got shut out, and had to i>e pulled back and taken right on the, outside, and she was in a handy position as they turned for home. However,. buyer Scorn showed her real quality in the straight and won comfortably by a couple of lengths from La Moderne, who beat Gold Trail fairly and squarely for second money. Tout le Mond, who did .not get the. best of runs in the first two turlongs, was a good fourth, with Pillow Fight and Gay Marigold next. Pillow Fight pulled hard for a mile and was beaten at the home turn.

Solid Second Dividend. 'Only a head defeat Prevented Prince Colossus paying a sensational the County Handicap. As it was, those who contributed towards the^ 32 10/ on his chance Received nearly two ior a second dividend after +iVnllv from-barrier rise and oniy oeeu deprived ofthe. lead hyJMoonfleet a furaepiivea ui <, From that point MoLfleeTandPrinc g e Colossus had a great hnttle hdme The pair were after a lurW had been covered with Blanford and Broken Brie n«t and Woodful at the head ° f * b ? °i£; r ru n n °£g «f tha horses further back in we .* lift toot twrt in the finish and outs.de the first E Blanford and Royal Gallant ,UA best ' Courthaven lost a lot of iuinp off and wasnot sighted; again.

AH the Way. Tl,fl Bueedy Tea Trader never gaveMy-

was in the saddle, kept the chestnut going and came round the home turn three lengths in front. Sticking on, lie had a length the best of L'Allegro, who had followed him all the way, when tiiC post was reached. Chromadyne, who was 1 third into the straight, filled that position at the end, with The 1 Quorn, who drew the fence at the barrier, but who was at the rear of the field after going two furlongs, finishing on in fourth place. Lady Quex, Arisus, and Exaggeration never threatened danger, Lady Quex finishing last. Improved Form. In winning the Glasgow Handicap, tlie Marble Arch gelding King's Archer showed improvement on his previous form at the meeting. He ruled third choice in the betting, Cricket Bat being an odds-on favourite, while there was plenty of money for Karangapai, Maori Boy was badly left at the start and Cricket Bat went out in the lead from Karangapai, King's Archer, and Merry Damon. King's Archer had moved into the lead crossing the top from Karangapai. All Humbug and Cricket Bat. In the run home King's Archer easily held off a strong challenge by Cricket Bat and beat ttie favourite by half a length, with Merry Damon a length and a half away, just in front of Jalldy Karo, Karangapai, Lord Val, with All Humbug last. ...
