BIG GORSE FIRE.
COX'S CREEK OUTBREAK.
WESTERN BRIGADE'S FIGHT.
For more ihan two hours a large outbreak of fire swept 10 acres of gorse, grass and scrub on some land off Richmond Road, near Cox's Creek, last evening. The fire commenced near the area bounded by Hukenui Road, Parawai Crescent and Tawariki Road, and spread through the scrub before a light wind, which increased in strength as the evening progressed. The fire had a strong hold before the Western Districts Fire Brigade was informed of the outbreak, so that the brigade had a big fight to get the flames under control. Although the flames spread over a wide area, no damage to property was done. There are only two houses in the viciniSy. Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and water was pumped from both on to the burning area, the lower streets not being reticulated. A large number of people watclied the outbreak. There were three grass fires in other districts yesterday afternoon, the districts being Avondale, Remuera and Mount Roskill. The outbreaks at Avondale and Remuera occurred in railway yards, and were caused by sparks from passing locomotives. The outbreak at Mount Roskill occurred in two vacant sections at Inverness Avenue, and was suppressed with first aid hosee.
