CITY AND SUBURBAN GAMES. TRUNDLING ON TRICKY WICKETS. INVICTA'S CHALLENGE TO LEADERS. For the first time this season the City end Suburban matches on Saturday were favoured with ideal weather, but. the "Crickets were a. trifle variable and in eeveral cases allowed the bowlers to take charge. This was instanced by the averages, of which that by V. C. Butler, with six captures for 42 runs, was the most commanding. It was a performance more to be respected, in view of the disheartening innings which the Mount Albert Old Boys experienced in their first strike against Green Lane. No less meritorious was A. Dunning's seven wickets for 60 runs for Harbour Board.

As in the previous match, thte Old Boys never gave much _ of a sign of settling do m to run-gi tting, and the trail of dismissals in an hour and a half for 62 runs (Cantlay 26, Butler 12, 10) ■was too bad to hold as a criterion of the batting material in that good young side. On the other hand, nothing must detract from the suave spin bowling of veteran A. Kerr, who, after ten overs, of which four were maidens, had five wickets for nine runs. In four more overs he got another victim, with but six additional rims scored off him. Gilleepie, with three wickets-for 17, did the rest, an alert field giving general support. The Lane team was also troubled by the breaking up of the wicket, and, after a good start by Gedye. (19), Elliott (33, run out) and R. Lonergan, who revealed resourcefulness to register 35, the innings faded out to a mere 109, under the fire of fine-length bowling by Butler, the captain of Mount Albert, who in their second innings started off with, no wickets for 23 runs, and may yet make it difficult for Green Lane to obtain a win. On No. 2 wicket Ponsonby commenced steadily with good play by Lonergan (36), one of the opening batsmen, and supplemented by Lewis f*B), the side held a fairly stabilised position. The later batsmen, Bennett (25) and particularly that smart young all-rounder Broberg (54 not out), carried the total to the second century by 5.40 p.m., the final figures being 212 runs. The ex-New Zealand representative bowler Finlayson had accounted for eix wickets for 69 runs, Burton at the other end co-operating for two wickets at the intermediate stage. R.V. set out to make their reply in promising style, Mackie and Goklsworthy playing to time unbeaten with 49 runs hoisted. The concluding part of this clash should provide plenty of interest. After the disposal of Rimmer for 23 runs, Yates and Roy Watkins provided the fireworks for the "gallery," withstanding a well-concentrated attack by Harbour Board until after 4 p.m., by which time they had sent up over three figures between them and given Invicta an encouraging lead. A. Dunning, who broke up the partnership, got Yates (59) and caught and bowled Watkins (83), following a very attractive and sustained exhibition of judicious batting by the latter. Dunning continued to be remarkably effective, and although George Morman (26) and R. Davies (23) made bold efforts to hit the tally along, both were included in the same bowler's fine average of seven ■wickets for 60 runs. The Invicta "tail" eoon went, but the total of 234 is sufficiently substantial to keep the Harbour

'Board batsmen busy, especially as one wicket has fallen for the first 10 runs. Some disappointment has been occasioned by the fact that no suburban player —Ralph Stall worthy (Harbour Board), Broberg (Ponsonby), Roy Watkins (Invicta) or others —was given selection for the Auckland eleven. Still, the association teams in Country Week will. have ample opportunities to demonstrate their merits and it is fully expected that the contest with the A.C.A. will be replete with interest for cricket followers in general. There is proven quality m the suburban batsmen and the bowling strength is particularly strong. REPRESENTATIVE ELEVENS.
