MATAMATA HORSES.
R. J. MATEER'S TEAM. CANDIDATES FOR ELLERSLIE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MATAMATA, this day. R. J. Mateer's pair Welcome Boy and Lady Lulu, who are to compete at the Taranaki meeting, were entrained thie morning, and are due to arrive at New Plymouth tomorrow morning. Both have done well since winning at TaumaiuDui. R. E. Thomson is going down to ride Welcome Boy, but so far no rider has been engaged for Lady Lulu. It is doubtful whether Standfast will be a starter on the first day at Ellerslie. If he starts at the meeting R. E. Thomson will return from Taranaki to ride him. Mateer is not at all anxious to give Standfast a race on the hard going, 60 that it will depend on the weather. The other Matamata quartet . engaged at Ellerslie, Lord Va), Woodful, Knight of Australia and Master Norval are all expected to keep tneir engagements on the first day. They are fit horses. Lord Val, Master Norval and Woodful will leave on Saturday, and Knight of Australia by float on Sunday. Knight of Australia and Lord Val were sent over seven furlongs on the plough yesterday morning, and finished together in 1.31. This is very fair time on this track. Both galloped resolutely. It took Lady Lulu a shade more to do a similar distance.
Barccscope has been leased to a patron of J. Anderton's Matamata stable. Mr. E. H. Cucksey, the owner, had also arranged for a 'lease of Princess Bede, but the mare wae injured in transport after the Waipa meeting, and will not be handed over until she recovers. This still leaves the Tirau owner with Flying Prince, Lady Diana and a Diaquenod colt.
