ONEHUNGA BASIN.
LAKE OR SPORTS GROUND 1 BUSINESS MEN ADVISE CAUTION. The future use of Gcddes Basin was discussed last night by the OnehungaManukau Chamber ol Commerce. ihe president, Mr. I. J. Sutherland, said the question was creating uneasiness among ratepayers, and the chamber should sound a note of caution before any excessive expenditure was decided on. He would like to see a lake and boat harbour, instead of a sports ground, from which a very small revenue was possible, and the upkeep of which would be beyond the means of the Borough Council. Mr. T. 11. Geraghty, a member of the Borough Council, said it would be a waste of money to fill the basin with soil. Mr. T. C. Schnackenberg agreed with the president, and argued that a sports ground could be formed afterwards if it were thought desirable. Mr. F. W. Mountjoy, another member of the council, said the council had decided to close the basin with the view to forming a sports ground, and to form a boat harbour on another site. The Auckland Harbour Board had prohibited the closing of the basin until the council had completed the protecting wall of the new boat harbour. It was decided to ask the Borough Council to obtaTti estimates of (a) the cost of forming an inland lake, and (b) the cost of converting the reserve into a sports ground.
