OVERDUE RATES.
DATE OF PAYMENT. POSTPONEMENT NOT POSSIBLE. The City Council.at its last meeting decided to postpone the date after which the 10 per cent penalty on overdue rates for the current year would be imposed until January IG, subject to the city solicitor advising that this could be legally done. The Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, said this morning that he had been advised that the council had not the power to do as suggested. When the city solicitor and town clerk were in Wellington recently they had interviewed the Controller and Auditor-General, who had promised to look into the position. "He has now advised," said the Mayor, "that he regrets that the council cannot do as proposed without statutory authority. This means that the rates must be paid within the legal limit of six months and 14 days from the date of the demand. The.first notices sent out are due for payment on December 16. _ "It is to be regretted that the council's desire to grant this assistance to ratepayers, by postponing payment until after the holidays cannot be given effeet."
