SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The final performance of a successful year in connection with the Manurcwa Musical Society was presented on Tuesday evening with a . rendering of Handel's "Messiah," under Mr. H. V. Burton, conductor of the society, with a choir of 50 voices. The soloists were Miss Lillian Woods (soprano), Mrs. Lambert (contralto), Mr. Roger Errington (tenor), and Mr. Arthur Cdlledge (bass). • • » • The National Reserve Nursing Division (St. John Ambulance Association) held its final meeting for this year on Monday evening. The ward room was nicely decorated wih bowls of flowers. The main feature of the evening was the competition for the Cammell Cups, six teams competing. Corps Superintendent C. W. Goodcrham set the test and acted as judge. He expressed pleasure at the high standard of the work, and congratulated the division on its efficiency. ' Lady Corps Superintendent E. Cammell made the presentation to the winning team, Ambulance Sisters J. Howes, A. Batt, E. Mills, C. Schroder. During the .evening a presentation was made to Mrs. M. Webber, divisional superintendent, by the division. * * » • Mrs. W. P. Locke presided at the meeting of the Te Awamutu branch of the Plunket Society. There were also present:—Mesdamcs Brooks, Collins, Downes, Glasgow, Goodall, Maeky, McCarroll, Mandeno, Peese, O'Brien, Oliphant, A. H. Storey, A. L. Storey, Whitelaw, West (treasurer) and Swarbrick (treasurer). The nurse's report for November showed 23 new cases, visits to homes 43, to rooms, adults 143, babies 122, older children 30; total visits 338; telephone calls 31, babies under supervision 182, older children 29. The secretary reported an interesting visit paid to the Ohaupo sub-branch. Another pleasing feature of the sub-branch activities . was the determined effort being made by the Pirongia sub-braneh to reduce its indebtedness to the branch. The treasurer's report showed that it would be necessary to hold the annual money-raising effort before the close of the financial year, and it was decided to hold a Paddy's Market next March. Efforts will be concentrated on the cake, produce and parcel stalls. The committee will go into recess for January, meeting again on the first Monday in February. Box donations for the month of November amounted to 18/4.

A largely-attended dance was held in the St. Michael's Parish Hall at Belmont on Tuesday, by the Takapuna branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association. Mr. Strong and Mr. C. Eaton were in charge of the dance programme, and Mr. and Mrs. Buckley's orchestra again gave voluntary, service. A balloon dance was won by Mrs. Eaton and Mr. Line. On the committees were Mesdames Ward, Wilkie, von Sturmer, D. M. Davidson, and Messrs. Ward, W. Smith, Strong, Lowrie, Blair and Major A. H. Wilkie. An invitation recital was-given by students of the Balmoral School of Music on Thursday evening. Miss Violet Robinson, A.V.C.M., the principal, received the guests. The artistic programme of violin, piano and orchestral items was. contributed to by Mesdames Melville, McCarty, James Molloy, A. Dawson, M. Molloy, E. Ryan, J. Miilvihill, Emma Ryan, M. Brauwhite, R. Gribble, B. Gordon, L. Garland, X. Tyre, J. Melville, E. McCarty. Mrs. H. Nichol gave two musical monologues, and. Mrs. McElroy's rstudentci rendered vocal items.
