CHESS CONGRESS.

PLAY STARTS DECEMBER 27. AUCKLAND CLUB AS HOSTS. The New Zealand Chess Congress, which is to be held in Auckland, will open on Tuesday, December 27, and will last a fortnight. In addition to representatives from other parts of the Dominion, Mr. S. Crakanthorp, a noted Sydney player, will attend. The Auckland Club will be officially represented by Messrs. D. I. Jones and H. N. Maddox and unofficially -by the Rev. Mr. Miller. Mr. M. E. Goldstein, ex-champion of Middlesex (England) and New South Wales, who has been resident in Auckland ' for three or four months, has decided to play for Auckland. His nomination will add considerable interest to the congress. A special committee has been appointed by the Auckland Chess Club to take charge of all arrangements. There will be at the most 14 players. Three sessions will be held each day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in _ the evening. The congress will be held in a large room in the Central Post Office Building on the second floor, the room used once every three months for' the payment of unemployment levies. A small admission charge for spectators, other than members of affiliated clubs, will be made. Mr. J. C. Grierson, who has played at many -championship gatherings and has been champion of New Zealaind as well as Auckland, will be president of the congress. The Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, has been invited to perform the opening ceremony. " The following are the nominations:— Messrs. D. I. Jones, H. N. Maddox, A. Miller, M. E. Goldstein (all of Auckland), S. Crakanthorp (Sydney), J. A. Erskine (Southland), E. H. Severne (Nelson),? K. V. Scott (Wanganui), S. Faulknor, Beyer, W. J. Fairbairn, F. K. Kelling, E. A. Hicks _ (Wellington) ._ An entertainment committee has been set up to make arrangements for the social side of the congress. As the depression has affected club funds considerably, an appeal is being made to enthusiasts and others to help_ make the visit of the players and "their wives as enjoyable as possible. , At a meeting of the Auckland Club last night it was decided to inaugurate a junior chess club at a nominal fee in order to foster the game among the young men of the community. A special night will be set aside for them each week and some of the more experienced players will be in attendance as instructors.
