MAIRANGI BAY.

SCHEME OF IMPROVEMENTS.

MUCH ALREADY ACHIEVED.

Visitors returning to Mairangi Bay now, after an absence of a few months, no doubt will be surprised to note the great change in its appearance, owing to the large amount of work done in improving roads and beautifying the bay generally. The executive of the Mairangi Bay Progressive Association, through their" personal efforts and in co-operation witn the Waitemata County Council, are carrying on work of an extensive nature. Beach reserves have been cleared and planted by "working bees," a ladies' committee rendering service by catering for the workers. Advantage has been taken of No. 5 scheme for clearing the large reserves and levelling the sports grounds, also for planting trees. It is proposed to lay out the sports ground in such a manner that as many sports as possible will be catered for. The scheme provides for six tennis courts, which will be completed as occasion dejnands. Three of the courts are nearing completion. The association hopes to derive a revenue from this source in order to provide facilities for the playing of other games. Works proceeding include the laying down of a croquet lawn and bowling green, and the formation of cricket and football grounds. An additional area has lately been added to the Domain, two acres of an adjoining estate having been acquired. It is proposed to make the hillside overlooking the Domain into a park. One hundred macrocarpa shelter trees have already been planted along the back boundary of the Domain, and pohutukawas and various native shrubs on the beach and creek reserves. A strip of land given by Mr. Amies will connect the park with . the main sports ground.

During the year sign-posts, bearing the name of the bay, were erected on the boundaries; also, one in the middle of the bay bearing the official notice board of the association. The Auckland Automobile Association was approached, and as a result one of their signs was placed at the junction of County Road with the main East Coast road.

It is thought advisable that the association should have a meeting-place, as well as a home for its social activities, and as soon as possible a building suitable for these requirements will be built,
