PENNANT BOWLING.

SATURDAY'S RESULTS.

RADICAL CHANGES IN POSITION

NEW LYNN STILL UNBEATEN.

(By TRUNDLER.)

The third round in the pennant competition commenced on Saturday under most delightful conditions, but <i break in the ■weathoi marred the concluding stages, and on. some greene the last few heads were played in a light drizzle, which completely altered the run of the bowls. The subjoined table displays the positions of the 33 clubs to date, showing the number of rinks representing each club, their wins and losses in Saturday's round, and the resulting percentage of wins in the three rounds combined. There js also shown the percentage of each club in the first round, omitting decimals, and the percentage at the end of the second round, so an examination of theise figures will clearly reveal how every club has "one up or down as the competition has proceeded, much better than any detailed comment.

It will be eeen that in eection A there are half a dozen clubs with chances good enough to keep the issue quite open,' but in section B the whole question depends on who can bring New Lynn within striking distance of the next six or eight clubs remembering that every loss in the next two rounds would brins them down 10 per cent.

Dr K. S. Macky, L, J. Keys, C. H. de Lwinav, Professor M. Walker (Auckland); G L Gladding, J. Pascoe, &.Jmkm, W. J. Truscott (Carlton); W Whittaker, M. Gordon, F. M. Ritchie, W. A. Lancastei (Carlton); W. R- Kerns A. K. Gatland, V. Livingstone, H. A. Robertson (Onehunga); L. Bray, T. T. McAlister,. S. Vella, J. Kerr (Onehunga); A S. Faire, F. Needham, C. E. Hardley, W Bremner (West End); R. G. Cox, J. Thomas, H. Walker, R. S. Higginbotham (Mount Albert). It is just possible that two other rinks will be made up before Friday, as two clubs are trying to get the requisite number. The president of the association, Mr. H. G Mayer, is having special badges made for the winners of the rink sections, and Auckland should have a good chance to lift some of these, even if for the first time a Dominion tournament in Wellington has to be won by a rink from outside the Auckland Province.

The open singles tournament commences to-morrow morning on six city and suburban greens. The matter o£ Sunday play has been dramatically pushed into the limelight by the recent incident in Hamilton, and further developments will be watehed with interest. In the meantime it may be mentioned that there are some obvious errors in the statements published, although there is not much to show whether the meeting made a mistake, or whether it was merely incorrectly reported. In the first place it is no use to inform the Frankton Club that it had deliberately broken the rules of the Dominion Bowling Association," for the association has no rule on the matter whatever, although last year an alleged statement by a prominent official was circulated through the Press to the effect that the association would disfranchise any club conducting a tournament on a Sunday. If the mover looks up the rules to find the authority for his motion he will also find that there is now no such body as the Dominion Bowling Association, as its name was changed eighteen months ago. At the same meeting the council approved the new rule, No.' 24 in the constitution, delegating to the executives of the various centres the sole right to sanction tournaments to which clubs invite competitors from other clubs. The South Auckland " centre executive is what met last week, not the centre iteelf, and., according to the constitution, it holds a a very strong position, even if it had not the support of the centre in refusing to sanction a Sunday tournament. In this matter, however, the centre executive is supported by the centre itself, for at the last annual meeting of the latter body the president was reported to have said that " there was a distinction between Sunday tournaments, and Sunday play. The centre took no exception to the latter. A rule had been passed prohibiting Sunday tournaments, and no case of infringement had come before the executive." In the report of the annual meeting of the centre held a year previously the following clause appears: "It was decided to prohibit Sunday tournaments under the jurisdiction of the centre." If all the facts are placed before the New Zealand Bowling Council for consideration at its half-yearly meeting next month it will have to decide to what extent it will he wise to uphold its own constitution and the two decisions of the local centre.

The same question came up in Sydney a fortnight ago, in an adjourned discussion on a club's application for a permit to hold a Sunday tournament. It was decided at the monthly meeting of the association, by 33 votes to 18, to inform the Cornulla Club " that the association views with apprehension any attempt to organise competitions on Sunday, and requests the club to abandon its venture in this direction."
