BISHOP WELCOMED.

In honour of the Rt. Rev. W. H. Baddeley, the new Bishop of Melanesia, a garden party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Robinson, Esplanade Road, Mount Eden, on Saturday afternoon by the St. Barnabas' Church missionary club. The weather was ideal for such an occasion, and a very enjoyable time was spent in the delightful grounds, and in viewing the lovely surroundings by the large number who attended. In the shade of some of the large trees a few stalls were set out, and afternoon tea was served in & marquee erected on the croquet lawn in front of the house, the view from here being a charming one of flowering beds. The Rev. F. G. Harvie, vicar of St. Barnabas' Church, introduced the bishop to the gathering and a welcome was also extended to Mr. F. Long, of Wellington, secretary of the Board of Missions, Mr. R. E. Tempest, warden of Siota Native College in the British Solomon Islands, who is at present on furlough, and the Rev. G. Cartridge, who returned last week from work ill the Melanesian Mission Fields. A porch was decorated with a banner bearing the word "Haeremai" in laurel leaves, and from this point tho bishop expressed his sincere appreciation of the welcome 1 which had been extended to him since his arrival in Auckland. He hoped that as a result of the function there would be a new interest in the work of the Melanesian Missions aroused among the people of Auckland. In a short speech Mr. R. E. Tempest made an appeal for more New Zealand men to go to the mission fields at Melanesia, and Mr. Long spoke along similar lines. A vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Robinson for lending their grounds for the garden party was proposed by Mr.» Harvie. During the afternoon enjoyable selections were given by an orchestra, under the direction of Mr. G. H. Hardey. Those in charge of tho stalls were: Sweets, Miss M. Hutch ings; strawberries and cream, Mrs. H. C. Robinson and Miss Haythornthwaite; afternoon tea, Mrs. W. H. Patterson; needlework, Miss Golder; Christmas tree, Miss Mavis Ward; apron stall, Miss Beryl Whybrow.
