A BEGINNER'S STORY.
(By lidua Harvey, age 12.) Strolling along with my sister one evening we came to a point, where there are a lot of rocks jutting out into the sea. Scrambling over these, we found plenty of mussels, which we gathered to take home. Next we came upon a cave, but as the tide was coming in we did not venture any further, but made our way back over the rocks. There were some men dragging a net for herring, and as they sccured a good haul everyone 011 the beacii had some to take home. We climbed up the bank for ferns, which grow in wild profusion. Feeling a little tired, we rested a while, watching seagulls circling overhead. Some of them came quite close, picking up any scraps we placed near by. Close to the shore a young penguin was floating, but went away as soon as it was disturbed. We all went for a row to Orakau; the sea being nice and calm, we had an enjoyable trip; after that we went home tired, but happy.
