POSSIBLE WORKS.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. TOTAL COST, £1,470,500. COMMITTEE'S SELECTION. When the Works Committee made its recommendations it had before it a report by the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, which, stated that the work at present being proceeded with would absorb from 1200 to 1500 men for the next two years. His chief aim had been to provide the maximum amount' of labour at a minimum of material and overhead expenditure. In view of the suggestion that work should be put in hand that would also provide work for artisans and result in the use of material that would directly and indirectly benefit the various industries of the city, he submitted a table of works for consideration. The senedule omitted any major traffic outlet scheme, for the reason that tht' engineer was of opinion that such work should only "be undertaken after the compilation of future traffic reports. However, he included three schemes which would have the effect of affording relief at some of the busier portions of the city, linking up street systems. The estimates submitted were tentative, as detailed plans and specifications had not been compiled. The Fall Schedule.
