ACTION DEMANDED.
RELIEF OF FARMERS. DIFFERENCE OVER METHOD. HIGH EXCHANGE! ADVOCATES. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) ■ ■ WELLINGTON, this day. Although on the surface the rural section in the Coalition which has been defeated in its demand, for an inflated exchange is marking tirae, it is known that members associated with the movement were yesterday "rounded up" and impressed again with the necessity of securing early Cabinet action to meet the desperate plight of the farmer. This movement is regarded as particularly significant, in view of the fact that Cabinet has still ahead of it several meetings which promise to be among the most momentous of their kind in the hostory of the Coalition. Wide differences of opinion exist as to the best method of assisting the farmers, whose representatives in the party declare they are desperate and insist on relief being given in some form or other. They are not content to let the matter rest, and it is the intention of the leaders of the high exchange faction to urge that relief equivalent to the benefits they anticipated from a high exchange be granted by the Government. On the other hand, the city Coalitionists regard the issue as closed. "The banks have given their reply, and there is nothing more to be argued," said one member last night. "The Bank of New Zealand is to be complimented on the promptitude with which it acted in allaying the feeling of unrest and uncertainty which had developed throughout the Dominion." It is ascertained that Mr. A. J. Stallworthy, M.P., who organised the counter-agitation, has received formal acknowledgment from the chairman of the Associated Banks, Mr. J. T. Grose, of the memorial presented to him last week. The letter indicated that copies of the memorial were being forwarded to the, trading banks.
