W.C.T.U.

The annual meeting of the Auckland Women's Chri6tian Temperance Union was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs. John Cook presiding. Miss Paul, who has just returned from a two years' visit to Great Britain, was welcomed to the meeting. The annual report showed that various causes had received practical help from the union, including Maori work, backblocks work, Willard Home, Loyal Temperance Legion, and Major Gordon's prison Christmas cheer. Sweets had been sent to the Costley Home and members had asisted in street collections and had in,various other ways done good service. Mrs. Hall, superintendent of the W.C.T.U. committee, in connection with the War Memorial Library League, gave an account of the backblocks work. She stated that 2740 magazines and 170 children's books, 1190 hard-covered books, 120 calendars, booklets and cards had been eent away, and she thanked the union for their donation. Mrs. Cook reported on Bible in schools work, and the' following resolution was passed: "B&lieving that righteousness exalteth a nation) we express deep regret that once again the Bible in Schools Enabling Bill has been shelved." Major Gordon gave a talk on her work and deplored that distressing cases were on the increase. One.great cause of lawlessness, she said, was the lack of home life. Children needed discipline and, home training to make them good citizens. Self-help and not so much giving of charity, she said, would be beneficial to the community. Greetings were received from Mrs. Hislop, a visitor from Dunedin. During the meeting an addrees on "Remembrance," taking lessons from the Eed Poppy of Flanders symbolising ehed blood, sacrifice, service and silence, was given by Miss Sterripson. The election for the year resulted in the same officers being elected, with Mesdames Ready and Pierce and Misses Paul and Mears as vice-presidents. The officers and superintendents of the union were thanked for their eervicep during the year.
