MARRIED MEN FOR CAMPS.
«NOTHING ELSE TOP- IT."
: MOUNT ALBERT MAYOR'S i conclusion: . ■ ' A motion by.Mr. J. H. Langley at a meeting of the Mount Albert Borough CouBCJI. last night "that, this council views with alarm the policy of tha Unemployment Board in drafting married men to country camps, and should approach the board for a subsidy" on work of; a permanent,' nature in the borough, and, if necessary; a conference of ; local bodies should'be called," was defeated, the Mayor, Mr. W. F. , Stilwell, speaking against it. Mr. Langley maintained that unemployed men. .undev No.. 5 scheme'should be put on work that would be of lasting benefit to the borough, and that the subsidy from the Unemployment Board should be used for overhead charges. He said it would keep married men in their homes and save much domestic difficulty. The Mayor said that, although he appreciated the sincerity of Mr. Langley's motion, the matter of the Unemployment Board subsidising the borough works • was quite impossible, since, as Mr. Coates had told him, the cost to the board would run into millions. Unemployed relief works done in the boroughs were only of community, not of a national, value. Therefore, he saw no reason why the Unemployment Board should assist to develop relief work. Mr. Stilwell said that, since the relief work in the boroughs would soon be exhausted, it was essential that married men go into the country where work wae offering. ''We do not want to send men into the country away from their homes, but there seems to be nothing else for it," he concluded.
