BOOKMAKER FINED.

"HOME-MADE" DOUBLE CHART PENALTY OF £20 IMPOSED. "Two constables saw this man taking bets in a hotel, although they could not pet a bet with him themselves," .saM Detective-Sergeant Kelly in the Police Court this morning, referring to Frederick William Crane, aged 52, agent, who pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker last Friday. Mr. Allan Moody said his client was a man with an excellent record, and owing to his war injuries he was unable to do hard work. There was no suggestion that he had ever tried to "beat" anyone for money, or that he was in a big way of business. "Even the 'tote' is not taking the money it used to, and with bookmakers it is the same," said Mr. Moody. "My client has not put forward any fictitious defence, and I would ask "y°m* Worship not to soar too high into the realms of high finance in imposing the fine. His double chart is only a home-made one " "Biit it is remarkably well done,' said the magistrate. (Laughter.) Crane was fined £20, or two months imprisonment.
