ATHLETICS.

Fine weather favoured the twenty-third annual athletic meeting of the Sacred Heart College, held on the school ground!' on Saturday. ■ A diagonal wind from the north-east somewhat hampered the runners, but did not prevent several records being broken. McCarthy created a new record for the senior walk in 3Jm, breaking the old record by 15s. E. Wordsworth, an intermediate, created a new time for the one mile, open, returning the tjmc of 4.57, as against the previous record of 5.2. He lowered the 440 yards senior record of 55 2-5s to 55s in the 440 yards Intermediate event. Woresworth Is only 15 years of age, -wljich makes' his performance a very creditable one. McCarthy, a senior, took the opportunity Iα this race of making a successful attempt on the senior record, breaking it by 15s in 330 The race itself provided considerable amusement, owing to the comic attitudes struck by many of the little boys. One little fellow's idea of walk racing was to take long strides, back almost horizontal to the ground. Since he did not come anywhere near the tail end. he might claim that his method was not without reason.

- I ATI fish which are obliged to rietsto the surface to breathe have their'tails placed differently; they are horizontal, instead of being , straight in a line with the body. Then when they flap them the fishes ascend or descend. In most fish there is a little bladder full of ajr, which always keeps them floating in the water.
