NEW ZEALAND CUP.

WON BY FAST PASSAGE. CAIMLANI* TAKES STEWARDS'. RED MANFRED THE STAKES (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHPJSTCHURCH, Saturday. The Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting was opened at Riccarton to-day in perfect weather. The track was in perfect order. In winning the New Zealand Cup Fast Passage broke the record of 3.23 3-5 held by Chide, who was also ridden by A. H. Eastwood. The totalisator handled £28,635, against £34,417 laet year, a decrease of £5782.

Favourite Fails in Linwood.

For the Linwood Handicap there was a field of 23. The Derby candidate Drum, Fire was a pronounced favourite, carrying £1026. Aga Khan, seconu choice, was entrusted with £377 10/. The feature of the race was the performance of High Tor and Aga Khan, who were the two last to leave the barrier, but who finished third and fourth. Drum Fire failed to jump out smartly and was not prominent. As soon as they settled down Idolise went to the front and set the pace for Hurlingham, Silver Streak, Worship, Hula Belle ani Arden's Beauty. Worship met with interference near the half-mile and lost ground. Idolise was first into the straight, but Huvlingham took charge near the distance, where Worship, coming fast, Silver Streak, and lan's March were also handy. Worship gradually got the better of Hurlingham, and beat him home by a neck. High Tor was two lengths away, third, clear of Aga Khan, with lan's March, ■ Silver Streak, Grand Review and Sham Fight next. The winner was the first visitor to win at the meeting.

Fast Passage Breaks Cap Record,

Shatter wae always favourite for the Cup, and he carried £1308 10/. Faet Passage, £1026 10/, and Korokio, £813 10/, were the next best supported. From a good start, Jaloux was the first leader, but when passing the judge's box the first time, Chopin had charge from Korokio, Jaloux, Red Racer, Gay Crest, Fast Passage, Minerval and Concentrate. The last three were Shatter, Historic and Arikira. When near Cutt's Korokio headed Chopin and as they entered the back stretch, Red Racer was next, followed by Jaloux, Gay Crest, Fast Passage, Pahu, Minerval, Historic, Concentrate, Spearful and Shatter. At seven furlongs, Korokio was seven or eight lengths clear of Chopin, who headed her pursuers from that point. However, her opponents, paced by Jaloux and Chopin, gradually reduced the gap. As they came round the home turn, Korokio was about three lengths in front of Jaloux and Chopin, -with Fast Passage, Historic and Minerval on the outside, all handy. Korokio was first into the straight, but below the distance, Fast Passage shot, to the front, drew right away from her rivals and won by six lengths from Minerval, who was half a length in front of Concentrate. Jaloux was a good fourth and then came Historic, Pahu, Spearful, Shatter, Chopin, Korokio, Red Racer, Flower and Gay Crest with Arikira last—the position he held throughout the race. The time, 3.23 1-5, 16 a record for the race. Shatter, the favourite, ran a most; disappointing race. Fast Passage ■is the first winner of the Winter Cup and New Zealand Cup. Trained at the same stable, Chokebore Lodge, 6he is a four-year-old sister to Waterline, who once beat Phar Lap in a weight-for-age race at Fleinington. The Clifford colours are always popular, and Fast Passage and her rider were given a great reception.

The Classic. For the Welcome Stakes the Austra-lian-bred Red Manfred was a solid favourite, carrying £1227. Fracas was second choice with £571. Sweet Agnes was the early leader, but there was little between Red Manfred and Sweet Agnes when they straightened for home. Red Manfred drew clear, of the other two, and Guarantee threw out a late challenge. Red Manfred, however, had no difficulty in winning by a length and a half from Guarantee, with Fracas three lengths jiway, third. Southdown was fourth. The winner is owned by Mrs. M. S. Curie, and trained by F. Davis at Woodville. Though brerl in Australia, Red Manfred was reared at Hororata stud, North Canterbury..

Argentic's First Victory. The Apprentices' Handicap resulted in a victory for Argentic, who scored his maiden victory; and he was ridden by A. Russell, who steered his first winner. Russell is one of the two promising featherweight boys apprenticed to F. D. Jones, who brought them from Australia. Muff was favourite, with £646, Rocket being eecond choice with £638, and the winner fourth favourite with £366. After going a couple of furlongs Rocket stumbled and lost his rider, J. Dowd, who escaped uninjured. Gay Nita made most of the running, with Jael, Pacify, Locksley and Palmary all well placed. Silver Sight and Argentic moved up coming to the home turn, and were first into the straight from Jael and Palmary. Argentic drew ahead of Silver Sight, and won by a length and a half, with Palmary two lengths away, third, and Muff fourth.

Cadland Wins Brilliantly. There was a long delay at the barrier in the Stewards'. Grecian Prince and Autbpay, who were both troublesome, were placed outside the hurdle, but they were two of the smartest away. After they had gone a little ■ way the most prominent were Fairweather, ,Royal Sceptre, Autopay, and Full Crop. Entering the couree proper Autopay led from Royal Sceptre, Full Crop, The Quorn, Grecian Prince, Silver Ring, and Cadland. Autopay wae still in charge at the half-difitance, but Cadland put in a great finishing run and won brilliantly by a length. Merry Peel was. a neck away third, a head in front of Arrow Lad. Then came Silver Ring, Normandy, The Quorn, Mount Boa, and Great Star. Cadland was favourite, carrying £1087, and Merry Peel, £682 10/, and Silver Ring, £553 10/, were next in favour. Cadland wae ridden by L. G. Morris and belongs to Mr. T. A. Duncan.

The stipendiary stewards held an inquiry into alleged interference by Cadland with Arrow Lad towards the finish, and decided to take no action. Red Sun Wins Narrowly. Red Sun and,, Earthquake, who were scratched for the Cup, finished first and third respectively in the Eiccarton Handicap, for which Ranelagh ( £1058) was favourite. Red Sun, the fourth choice with £627, was last for a good part of the race, but moved up when coming to the home turn, and won narrowly from Some Toff after an interesting finiah-
