SPRING RACING.

THE AUCKLAND MEETING. HOTAI ARTIST WINS CXTP. DEAD-HEAT Es T WELCOME STAKES. The spring meeting of the Auckland Kacing Club opened at Ellerslie on Saturday in fine though windy weather. There was a good attendance, though the totalisator showed a decrease of £2905 10/, the sum of £25,909 10/ going through the machine, compared with £28,815 for the first day of the previous spring fixture. There was some splendid racing, the finish in the Mitchelson Cup being particularly good, less than half a length dividing the three placed horses. The defeat of Pillow Fight in the Great Northern Guineas was a. surprise. He was well back early, but was handy at the entrance to the straight, though over the concluding stages he had no chance with Gold Trail, -who came from further back than he did, and beat him easily. Pillow Fight just managed to. keep his head in front of Tea Trader to get second honours. Diatomous tried to win the Welcome Stakes all the way and just failed, Princess Doreen getting on terms with him just as they crossed the line, the judge declaring a dead-heat. Cliromadyne surprised by , winning the Flying Handicap, which ■was his first success for a long time.

The Sprint Event. In a field of eight in the Shorts Handicap Golden Wings ( £748) was a better favourite than Huntingdon (£674), while Exaggeration (£432) was the third fancy. Backers of the favourite were always on good terms with themselves, as Golden Wings jumped out of the barrier first and led all the way. After the field had settled down Golden Wings was leading from Exaggeration, Tradesman, Gold Day, Tetrarchate, High Comedy, Persham and Huntingdon, the last-named having missed the jump-out, from the barrier. There was practically no change in positions into the straight, and Golden Wings won by a length from Exaggeration. The pair were well clear of the others, High Comedy three lengths away third, followed by Gold Day, Tradesman, Huntingdon and Tefcrarchate. Golden Wings was weighted at 9.0, but the apprentice's allowance was claimed, and she carried 8.9.

As the field reached the distance Persham, who was at the rear, staggered and fell, and it was found he was bleeding internally. He was in a dying condition and it was promptly decided to destroy Mm.

An Overdue Win. ATI but Psychologist and Catoma lined up for the Mitchelson Cup, and in a good betting race the public made View Halloo (£676} favourite, with the bracket, Gibraltar and Eastertime (£576), eecond favourite, and Antique (£518) next. The winner, Royal Artist, carried £390. Tigerism was first out and led past the stand from Great Emblem and View Halloo, who were together, followed by Thespis, Motere, Lord Val, Royal Artist, Te Hoia, Gay Cockade, Protomint, Antique and Gibraltar. Along the back View Halloo and Motere were together in the lead from Thespis, Great Emblem, Lord VaL Tigerism, Royal Artist. Te Hoia and Antique. View Halloo and Motere were still the-leadere crossing the top, with Great Emblem, Lord Val, Tigerism, Gay Cockade, Royal Artist, Te Hoia and Antique racing in that order. Gay Cockade had moved up third behind View Halloo and Motere entering the straight, where Great Emblem, Lord Val and Royal Artist were handy. In the run home a great race saw Royal Artist win by a neck from Great Emblem, with.View Halloo a head away. Antique was fourth, with Motere, Te Hoia, Protomint, Limeen, Tigerism, Gay Cockade, Flying Prince and Lord Val following. Trouble in Trouble. Haakon and The Roadman were withdrawn from the Hunters' Steeplechase, for which Trouble (£591) and Neil (£4lß);.were best supported. The winner, Absent, carried £275. Cat-i-mes led up the Mil the first time from Neli, Trouble ind Mashoor. At the double in front of the etand Trouble and' Cat-i-mes were together in'the lead from Neil, Mashoor, John Bull, Absent and General Lu. Frouble made a fualty jump at the fence ilong the back and was pulled up, and Neil and Cat-i-mes led up the hill from Mashoor, Absent and John BulL Absent then put in a good run and led into the straight from Neil, John Bull and Cat-i----mes. In a great battle home Absent beat Neil by a head, with John Bull five lengths away. Mashoor was fourth, followed by Cat-i-mes and General £/u. Dead-heat in Stakes. The good field* of 16 juveniles went to the post for the Welcome Stakes, and backers summed the position up correctly, as the first and second favourites, Princess Doreen (£862) and Diatomous (£529), fought out the issue and ran el dead-heat. Diatomous jumped out quickest and led down the hill and through the cutting from Wait and See, Gipsy Love, Princess Doreen, Gold Pocket, and Gay Shiela. Into the straight the order was Diatomous, Gipsy Love, Wait and See, Princess Doreen and Gold Pocket. Diatomous looked like winning at the distance, bat Princess Doreen finished well and got Tip to make a dead-heat of it. Gipsy Love was two lengths away, and then followed Wait and See," Pelagia, Gold Pocket and Midian. Voitre's Third Winner. Though a field of 19 went to the post for the Gordon Handicap backers summed up the position correctly and had the pleasure of seeing the first two favourites fill the leading places. Carfex (£870) was the favourite from Good Run (£679), the third choice being Palace (£471). Woodful led along the back from Karangapai, Good Run, Carfex, Holly Lu, Jewelled Girdle, Tarporley and Booklaw, but crossing the top Karangapai had taken charge from Good Run, Holly Lu, and Carfex. Karangapai led into the straight from Carfex, Holly Lu and Good Run and then Carfex took charge, to go on and win by two lengths from Good Run, with Tarporley, who was sixth into the straight, a length and a half, away third. Holly Lu was fourth, with Teels, Palace, Catch'em, Woodful and Princess Bede next. Carfex was the third winner ridden, by .EL. Voitrs. "

Aβ the field raced past the three furlongs post Hiata broke a leg and had to be destroyed. Surprise of the Day. It was left to the Flying Handicap to provide the surprise of the afternoon, the little fancied Chromadyne beating the favourite, Hunting Cry, and paying a solid double figure dividend. Hunting Cry carried £1044, Chrysology, the second fancy, £510, while Chromadyne had only £134 Invested on his chance. Chromadyne had charge along the back from Whakapara, Pomp, Jalldy Karo, Chief Joy and Hunting Cry. Acroes the top Pomp was the leader from Chromadyne, Gay Lap, Whakapara, Hunting Cry, King's Archer, Chief Joy and Speedmint. There was practically no change as the field rounded the home turn, but then Chromadyne went up to head Pomp. Hunting Cry threw out a strong challenge over the final stages, but Chromadyne hung on to win by a neck, with Speedmint half a length away third, follower by Whakapara, Pomp, Llariore, Gay Lap, Chrysology and King's Archer.
