SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

An effort is being made this week to raise funds to carry on the work of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, and a shop is being opened in Newmarket to-morrow to this end. An energetic committee, under the president, Mre. Devore, een., is hard at work, and amongst those busily engaged are: Mesdames Preston Chambers, Mdorhouse, Harrisson, Scott-Young, Devore, jun., and the Misses Layton, Spencer and Harrison.

A successful children's fancy Cress dance wae held in the Public Hall, Papatoetoe, on Thursday evening in aid of the local Relief Workers' Association. The hall was gaily decorated. The judges of the fancy costumes were Mrs. Woods and Mr. L. Brown, the prizewinners being:—Shirley Lovett, Eay Chaplin, Eunice Chaplin, Sylvia Mayall, Dorothy Hill, Brian Jarrett, Eric Barker, Tony Fugle, Mayna Denton, Maureen Sutcliffe, Betty Calder, Lester and Brian McKenzie. The ladies' committee were: Mesdames C. Newcomb, J. White, W. H. Barker and W. Postlewaight.

The Kohi-St. Helier'e Bay W.C.T.U. annual meeting was held on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Hugh Kasper presided and Mrs. C. Perkins gave a devotional address. Musical items were rendered by Mesdames Neave, Gray, Anderson and Lewis Eady, also an elocutionary item by Mrs. Frank Wooler. The election resulted in Mrs. Hugh Kasper, district president, being elected president, pro tent, Mre. C. Perkins and Mrs. Hubber, .vice-presidents, Mrs. Lewis Eady hon. secretary, and Mrs. C. Phillips hon. treasurer. A bring and buy table was successful. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Johnson and the Misses White.

Mrs. N. Anderson, of Mount Eden, gave a birthday party on Friday at J.CX. tearooms. The tables were arranged with Iceland poppies and crystal b'aekets, and the guest of honour wa3 Miss Dearley Anderson. The hostess received her guests in a petunia crepe de chine and pastel pink straw hat. Among those present were:—Mesdames Andrew Donald and Anderson, Misses Ruby Donald, Madge Edward, Beryl Greene, Rona Edwards, Joy Kennedy, Myrtle Bowman, Marie Birch, Waveney Davies» Dorothy Hemus, Shirlejr Hicks and Pearl Bolone.

The" Remuera Tennis Club opened "their season on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of a large number of .members and visitors. The progressive tennis tournament prizewinners were Miss J. Dobbs and Mr. E. Hickeen. The club's colours, white, blue and gold, gaily decorated the pavilion, where a delicious tea wae served. The ladies' committee was: 'Mrs. H. L. Robson, Misses Marjorie Maefarlane, Brookes, Leelie Roberton and Asser. Among those who attended were: Mesdames Edgar Bartleet, Eric Yates, J. C. Finlay, W. Watkins, Eld on Napier, E. Hickson, Nicholls, W. Walker, E. Tonks, A. C. Jacobs, N. Erson, R. Griffiths, Airey, M. Mahon, J. H. Hall, A. Wells, S. Hodges, E. Napier, H. Clay, L. Martelli, Schroff, Misses N. Gooseman, D. The Eden and Epsom Tennis Club held a progressive tournament and dance at Clive Eoad on Saturday evening to celebrate the opening of the season. The committee present were: Mrs. L. 8. Rickerby, Misses Nancy Anderson, Pat Miller, Alice Johns, and Alice Kennedy. Among those present were: Mesdames R. B. Hardy, A. C. Johns, V. K. Johns, B. Herrick, Syme, YV. Grattan, L. Hill, Parker, Bone, Armitage, Chamberlain, Mueller, King, Misses Bebe Cook, J. Ramsay, Beryl Knight, Vera Derham, Marie Jones (Sydney), Thora Brodie, Kath Knott, D. Newton, K. Ellis, F. Lowry, D. Moir, Zena Bishop, Rita Hill, K. Leonard, R. Drake, Molly McDougall', J. Thomson, Molly Tyler, Jean Fogerty, Myrtle Hughes, Barbara Miller, Mabel Hughes, Jean Doris White, Billie Jessup, Sheila Lockington, Isa Jessup, and Queenie Robson. The prizes for the tournament were won by Miss Thora Brodie and Miss Bebe Cook, and Mr. J. P. Glennie, Mr. A. Brown, and Mr. Winstone.

The monthly meeting of the Mount Albert Ladies' Arolia League was held on Thursday at the residence of Mrs. M. G. Tremaine, of Marlboroiigh Street. Mrs. Smythe, president, presided. A letter of thanks and appreciation was received from the secretary of the Mount Albert Welfare League for their generous offer of coal for the needy of that district. A grocery afternoon was arranged for the next meeting, the proceeds to be handed to the Mount Albert Welfare League for the needy for the Christmas season. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Tremaine at the conclusion of the meeting. * • • •

The Technical School, Wellesley Street, was en fete on Friday afternoon and evening, when the women teachers, assisted by the men teachers, gave- the day girl students a Yuletide party. Owing to the examinations of the school it was decided to give the social gathering a month earlier. Games, competitions, and a delicious high tea arranged by the domestic science mistress, Miss Adele Seay, brought an enjoyable evening to a close. Miss Marion Waters, the head prefect, addressed those present on behalf of the pupils, and thanked the teachers. A competition game for the teachers was won by Miss Lottie Vickery. Among the visitors were: Mrs. G. J. Park, Mrs. Allum, Mrs.Taafe, Mrs. W. B. Burley, Miss Carnachan and Miss Alice Basten. • • ♦ *

The Devonport ex-servicemen held ■their annual dance at the Pirate Shippe Cabaret at Milford on Saturday evening, with Mrs. E. W. Sharpo ae hostess and Mr. F. C. Daviee, chairman of the social committee, master of ceremonies. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Sharp, wearing forget-me-not blue satin and lace coat; Mrs. Leland, black georgette with metal bead embroideries; Mrs. McComb, wine red lace; Mrs. T.
