SELLING CIGARETTES.
CHINESE SEAMAN FINED
CHARGED UNDER CUSTOMS-ACT,
Chinese cigarettes were being sold at the rate of 4d a packet on the waterfront yesterday, unj;il Customs officers heard of it and arrested a mefriber of the Chinese crew of the Bank Line steamer Hal eric. The man was charged under the Customs Act, appeared 'before the Collector of Customs, Mr. J. Mcintosh, this morning, and was fined. The number of cigarettes sold is not known. It is understood, that members, of the crew of . the Ilaleric are periodically issued with cigarettes, and, finding themselves in port and. short of money, they endeavoured to sell some of their supplies. An officer of the Customs Department was sent aboard the Haleric and had no difficulty in buying half a dozen packets. . ■ • The accused Chinese was fined only a small sum.
