BASIC WAGE DEMANDED.

RELIEF WORKERS' CONDITIONS.

The conference of trade union representatives and representatives of the Unemployed Association ended last evening. The principal resolution was to the effect, in the event of the Government refusing to introduce a basic wage, it be a recommendation to the industrial movement to use the strike weapon or any other method to defeat the employers in their attempt to abolish awards and agreements.

The following -policy was adopted in respect to the unemployed: Abolition of the flat tax of £1 a year; all money required to deal with unemployment to be raised by a graduated tax according ■to the wage or income received; a substantial contribution from the Consolidated Fund; a heavy tax on all dividends paid to absentee dividend-drawers and a tax on all profits carried to reserves; the reinstitution of the graduated land tax, the money obtained to be used for the purpose of relieving unemployed. It was also decided that any method adopted bv the Unemployment Board in economicailv forcing men-into camp be abolished; that where camps are proved necessarv, providing accommodation or a suitable nature for wives and families is not available, a separation or nignt allowance be a condition of acceptance of camp work; that there be no differentiation between male and female unemploved or employed workers, the same privileges to be accorded to both sexes in regard to relief in accordance witn responsibilities; that the present system and treatment of single men by the Unemployment 80-ird be abolished and that they be treated as other workers a.cording to their responsibilities; that compensation paid to relief workers be based on the daily rate of pay for six da vs. failing this the compensation be the full amount earned on relief wor*..
