A CURIOUS TOP.

Here is the way to make a very curious top with which you can get a great deal of fun. Prom, a piece of white cardboard <;ut a disc four inches; in diameter and then mark it with black India ink in the way shown in the sketch. Through the centre push a small piece of pencil with a good point so that tie disc Can be spun like a top. Now spin, the top in the direction of the hands of a clock: that is, from left to right, and the outermost lines will appear, to be greenish blue, those nearest the middle'reddish and the intermediate lines yellow and green. To get another effect spin the top in the opposite direction and you will have the order of the

colours reversed. The brightest colours are secfired when the top is spun in a strong artificial light. You will also find that the shades vary a good deal according to the pace at which the top is going round. When the ' movement is very rapid the tints are bright and strong, but as the speed lessens the shades become more subdued.

In making this top it is advisable to keep the pencil stub as short as possible, with only a very small portion protruding above the cardboard circle. A plain pencil should' be used as bright colours will affect the showing of the rings when the top is spun.
