HOW KATIKATI WAS NAMED

An old Maori chief was crossing at the ford an the tidal river "between Bowentown Heads and Tanners Point, when lie walked on to a mussel-bed. The shells cut his feet, and he cried out '"E katikati and Aku waiwai i nga kutai (my feet are being cut by the mussel shells). Hence the name kati-kati (cutting).
