ROSE SHOW.
The rose show of the Auckland Horti- ' cultural Society will take place on Thursday and Friday, November 10 and 111, in the Scots Hall, Symonds Street. i There is every promise of a beautiful and interesting exhibition. The design is to take the form of a colossal rose warden, which, with natural arches and climbing roses, will give the effect of the blooms being displayed with a - natural" and • harmonious setting. The ~ times are not too good and luxuries have to be cut out. Horticulture, however, is no luxury, but a necessity, and flowers are as essential as cabbages and meat. Unemployment and shortage of cash have benefited the gardening phase, and "roses and cabbages" seem for the' time being to have supplanted the motor'' car, etc. Weather conditions and th» season taken all through have been favourable, and there should be an ex- ' cellent display. Exhibitors and flowergrowers should see that the hall lg packed with the best that Auckland can produce. Never mind the prize, give the public a floral feast. With the popular cry, "Back to the land," and advice from all sides to send our boys out to the country, what better example can be oiven of the fact that the soil produces the sweetest and most beautiful things on earth to those who seek for them, and that working the soil can be something far more interesting than just "muck and mud." The show should be supported by every individual who has his country's welfare at heart, because a flower show is an advertisement to the fact that there is no hobby or recreation that can give the same pleasure, health and satisfaction, at so little cost, and with such benefits to the community at large, as the cultivation of flowers.
