EYELASHES BY THE GROSS.

No; mere man could resist a burst of laughter when he hears of buying eyelashes in bottles, records a London paper, yet he supplies the market where false beauty is sold. Experience abundantly testifies, experts say, that artificial eyelashes withstand hard wear very nobly, whether it arises from the rude assaults of sea water or from excessive floods of emotion. But their hold being very slight, they have a habit under unusual stress of slipping their moorings and disappearing, leaving nasty blanks which call for speedy personal attention. So another valuable repairing property has been dumped into the already bulging vanity bag. Prior to and during the heat wave our friends the directors of the proprieties hastened to explain how ladies could assume a becoming brown or tan, or'russet, in the quickest possible time and in the right places. Now, with August hardly over, they are keen on letting it be known that none of these shades will harmonise with what will soon have to be worn indoors, and are beginning to give advice how to get rid of the laboriously acquired tints in the most expeditious way. Nothing has yet been said as to what new raid on the planned designs of Nature is in contemplation. Artificial dimples have liad their turn, and proved a meagre success. Freckles have been tried, but for a while they will be unseasonable, not being a winter delicacy. An opening might seem possible for movable moles. But we must wait patiently. The humorists of fashion have never failed us.
