- , j If the earth was without atmosphere, life on its surface would be impossible, even if Nature designed beings who covM live without air, for the constant fusillade of shooting stars, travelling thousands of times faster than rifle bullets, would soon wipe out every living thing.. The atmosphere acts as a kind of bulletproof overcoat. Owing to its presence ! meteors are burnt to harmless dust whilst they are still a hundred-miles above oor -lteads.
