_ In the parish churchyard of Fortingal, in Perthshire, there is a giant yew which ha« the .reputation of being the oldest tree in Europe. It has been estimated to be from 2500 to 3000 yearn old. In 1769, when the trunk was' intact, it had girth of 56 feet and a diameter of nearly 18 feet. To-day there remain only two fragments of the enormous trunk. They are about 14 feet apart.
