DAMAGED SCOW.

TOWED TO AUCKLAND. MISHAP ON COLVII/LE BEACH. CAUGHT ON LEE SHORE. The scow Wendel, which received a severe battering when caught by a sudden change of wind on the beach at Waiaro, Cape Colville, last Saturday, arrived at Auckland this morning. She was towed from Cabbage Bay last night by a launch. Captain J. P. Kasper, shore skipper for Messrs. J. <T. Craig, Ltd., said this morning that in the ordinary course of events the scow left Auckland last Friday for the peninsula to load shingle. She arrived at Waiaro on the Saturday and was beached. Loading began and was well under way, when suddenly the wind changed, a nasty chop came up, and they could not get off the beach. It is an open roadstead and there is no shelter. There were two men on aboard, the master, Mr. C. Hooks, and Mr. C. Purdy. Both did their utmost to get the scow afloat when the wind changed, but their efforts were unavailing. Seas began to break over the scow, and the two men went ashore.

The bulwarks of the vessel were extensively damaged and two large pieces were torn right out. The deck this morning was littered with seaweed, twisted ropfes and shingle inches deep. Last Tuesday, as soon as the weather moderated, the scow was moved to Cabbage Bay, which is close to the shingle beach. Temporary repairs were made before the tow to Auckland was started.
