ANGLING ON TONGARIRO.

A PROMISING BEGINNING. FISH IN GOOD CONDITION. (iFrom Our Own Correspondent.) TAUMARUNUI, Thursday. A glorious day, with the river in perfect condition, welcomed > anglers on the Tongariro for the opening of the season on Tuesday. Fishermen early on the river wera well rewarded, as fish seemed to be biting best then. Messrs. Mannering, Barber and Worrall, with Miss Worrall, took 21 fish from Major Jones' pool before 8 a.m. These fish were much better than last year, only, six having to be returned. Messrs. Whitney and Dyer took 18 fish for the day, and Mr. Reynolds (Whaka•tane) took his limit.

The flood of last week took the big majority of fish down, and the fish left are' well worth catching, as they fight as well as the majority of May fish last year. Bags until the first' run will be small but good. The best trolling flies are the red-bodied and green-bodied matuka, Taylor's special and Maori chief. The latter is a new fly, with a green body and red top-knot, with brown wings. Two silver cups presented to the Tongariro Anglers' Club, by Mr. Whitney, of Auckland, are on exhibition. One is for the heaviest fish caught in the Tongariro, and the other for the best fish from the Upper Waikato. Mr. Whitney has had a track cut to Begg's pool, on the Upper Waikato. Anglers are much incensed at the right-of-way between Mr. Fargy's and Mr. Justice Ostler's sections being still closed, although representations have been made to headquarters.
