Y.W.C.A. WORK.

A social afternoon was given by Mrs. J. W. Lowe on AVcdnesday afternoon at her residence, Devonport, to afford an opportunity for some of the executive of the Y.W.C.A. to meet some of the Devonport ladies and have a.friendly | talk on the work of the institution. Mesdames A. D. Campbell, president, M. Rudd, treasurer, and C. W. Webster, chairman of the auxiliary, gave short talks, and explained that although this institution exists for the building of character and citizenship it docs further good work, and has since the great depression been heavily ta;*;ed owing to the. generous business people of this town who have hitherto given most generously having had to curtail their subscriptions, and the institution has had to extend charity to a greater number. With these drawbacks the executive has had to think out ways and means by which the revenue might bo supplemented. To do this they have set up an auxiliary to work in conjunction with the committees and the suggestions of Miss Jean Stevenson, the general secretary for New Zealand. These suggestions were put forward by Mrs. C. W. Webster to try to interest ladies to give afternoons in their homes, bring and buy afternoons, jumble sales, or entertainments of various kinds. Mrs. Campbell is very hopeful that this afternoon will give the work an impetus. Mrs. Lowe was assisted by Miss Beatrice Lowe. During the afternoon the guests wore entertained with music. Mrs. Bell-Booth, Miss Whitson (Dunedin), and Miss Alys Moncur sang, accompanied by Madame HumphreySteward. Madame Humphrey-Steward offered to arrange a concert at an early date, with Mrs. Fish putting on Mrs. Jarlcy's waxworks, and it is hoped it will lead to.further offers of assistance. Before leaving, Mrs. A. D. Campbell thanked Mrs. Lowe and the ladies who had rendered the musical items. Those present were: Mesdames A. A Hough, G. A. Gribbin, A. H. Blackburn, F. Fish, C. Hamlin, E. Bell-Booth, A. E. Alison, Humphrey-Steward, A. D. Campbell, M. Rudd, C. W. Webster, Misses BlairI.Mason, A. Moncur, L. Whitson (Dun[edinj, andswafSmetL
