HOURS TOO LONG?
SERVICE CAR DRIVERS
ALLEGED DANGER ON ROAD
A complaint that a danger is caused to motorists through the long hours worked by service car drivers and motor truck drivers was made by the Hamilton agency to the council of the A.A.A. last night. ~ ~ "One case was mentioned, eaid tne letter, "of a driver between Katikati and Auckland having driven from 2.30 a.m. to 5.45 p.m.; also that service car drivers, Hamilton to Auckland, make two trips daily, 324 miles, and that in another case, Te Kuiti to Wanganui, via Mount Messenger, the driver was on duty from 2 a.m. to 2 p.m." Such long hours, in the opinion of the agency, lowered the vitality and efficiency of the drivers to the danger of other users of the road. The Chairman, Mr. F. G. Farrell: I agree with that. Some of the drivere are on the road eo long that they fall asleep at the wheel. Mr. H. J. Butcher: In California there is a regulation which states that no service car driver may drive more than 150 miles without an eight-hour rest. That system is the best. It was decided to send a letter embodying that view to the Commissioner of Traneport.
