There was a Labour Government in office 270 years ago, during the Commonwealth. One of Cromwell's councillors was a draper, a second a brewer, a third a man-servant. A fourth, had been a link-boy who guided pedestrians through the ill-lit streets with hie torch, a fifth a private eoldier, a 6ixth a carpenter, a seventh a tailor, an eighth, a drayman, and a ninth a cooper. Cromwell was a gentleman farmer, and most of hie assistants in the Government of the country were drawn from the working classes. ,
