INDUSTRIAL UNITY.

TRADE UNION CONFERENCE. THE ARBITRATION ACT. DISCUSSION OF CONSEQUENCES. Forty delegates representing fifty unions, affiliated to the Alliance of Labour or the Trades and Labour Council, and the Unemployed Association, assembled at the Trades Hall this morning to consider the situation that had arisen owing to the amendments made last session to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, ami the present of industrial unity. A circular convening the meeting stated that the business of the conference would be to discuss a uniform policy in connection with industrial disputes. "As you arc aware," it stated, "some unions have come to agreements in conciliation involving reduced wages, longer hours, and loss 6f conditions that have taken years to gain. In order to avoid this state of affairs it is absolutely necessary that there should be a complete understanding for the future. The conference will also take the opportunity of discussing ways and means for closer and better industrial organisation." Mr. G. Davis, secretary of the Drivers' Union, was elected chairman, and committees were set up to deal with various aspects of the questions to come under discussion. The following resolution was carried: "That a standing committee bo selected for the purpose of co-operating with all unions in resisting the wage reduction policy of the Employers' Federation; in the event of organisations failing to agree in conciliation, the committee to have the power to convene a conference of- the local industrial movement with a view to taking suitable action to protect the organisation involved." During this afternoon's and tomorrow's sessions remits which have been forwarded from various unions and from unemployed organisations will be discussed.
