PRESERVATION OF WAIPOUA.
COMMITTEE PROPOSAL. SUPPORT BY A.A.A. COUNCIL. A protest against any attempt to utilise the Waipoua Kauri iToreet was contained in a letter from the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture to the A.A.A., considered last evening. The institute stated that' recently it had been informed that a proposal was afoot to investigate the yield of kauri, the bleeding of kauri and its effects, and the removal of decadent or over-mature trees on an economic basis. The institnte had subsequently asked for the creation of a sanctuary of 9000 acres. The institute council had decided to form a special joint committee to be called the Waipoua Forest Preservation Committee, and a meeting was to be held on November 11. The presence of two representatives from the A.A.A. was asked. "Waipoua should be preserved if possible," remarked the chairman, Mr. F. G. Farrell. Mr. S. Irwin: All who have travelled abroad know that it is one of the forest wonders of the world. He added that the fact of there being a few dead trees did not provide a reason for giving over the whole forest to the axe. Messrs. G. Henning and Crookes were appointed to represent the A.A.A. at . the meeting of the institute.
