UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS.

BEGUN THIS MORNING. LARGE NUMBER OF ENTRANTS. In the few minutes preceding 9.30 this morning the corridors at the Auckland University College were thronged -wi'Jh young men and women carrying papers, books and scraps of notes. A few minutes after the half-hour, those corridors were deserted. The examinations for the various New Zealand University degrees and diplomas had started. The session is unusually long this year, and does not end until the afternoon of Saturday, November 19. For the first papers this morning, the seating capacity of the University was taxed. There were 623 candidates. The total number of entries for the Auckland centre was 2008, said the chief supervisor, the Rev. P. S. Smallfield, but the total number of students taking part in the examinations was likely to be considerably more, for the same student might be sitting for a B.A. and also for some sort of a diploma. His name would only be counted once. This year there was a larger number than ever taking the examinations. , The first morning, added Mr. Smallfield, was the busiest for £he supervisors. Students'who sat for the 'examinations do not realise the work entailed. Mr. Smallfield said • that he and his staff had been dfoing organisation work for a fortnight. He is assisted by the Rev. A. John Greenwood, assistant in chief; ten supervisors in charge of rooms, and 22 assistant supervisors. There are this year a large number of Auckland examiners in English, Latin, Greek, history, philosophy and other subjects. On December 1 the examinations for the University entrance (matriculation) begin at the University, as well as other sub-centres.
