COACHBUILDERS , AWARD.
LOCAL OR DOMINION V
JUDGE'S OPINION' SOUGHT.
Whether or not failure to agree as to the clauses for a new award for Auckland would vitiate the Dominion award as far as Auckland was concerned, was the point at issue this morning at the adjourned hearing of the dispute between employers and employees in the Auckland coach and car building industry. The employers wore represented by Messrs. S. E. Wright, M. P. Murray, E. Dickson and C. Cavanagli, and the employees by Messrs. A. Blowdcn, O. H. Menzies, and E. Daly. Mr. B. Martin was also on the employees' side of the table.
Mr. Wright said that those whom he represented were willing to discuss the clauses at the meeting, with the idea of forming a new award. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally): If that failed, what then? Mr. Martin: Deadlock. The employers would have to run on the old Dominion award. Mr. Wright: That is where we disagree. After some discussion Mr. Wright asked whether the employees' assessors would accept the ruling of the judge alone of the Arbitration Court. "Yes," replied Mr. Martin, "though we would have, preferred a full Court." The council was further adjourned for not more than 14 days, until a reply is received from the judge.
