SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

On Saturday. a_pleasant surprise party was taken by Mr. and Mrs. E. Halett to the home of* Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Adams, "Leonore," Avondale. The party included the orchestra members of the Remuera, which is now in port.' Some" beautiful music was played, to which, the guests danced. Among those present were: Mesdames E. Halett, L. Adams, Shannon, Len Adams, and Misses B. 'Ingram, I. Parkinson, E. Halett, 1..Hi11, L. Adams and Z. Adams.

Mre. Alan Lennard, of Mount Eden, entertained a number of guests on Monday afternoon, when progressive bridge was enjoyed. Purple and pink stocks were used"ae floral , decorations in the lounge and living room. The tea tablo looked dainty with blue larkspur and pink roses. The hostese wore a dark red lace frock, with email coatee. The prizewinners were Mesdamee C. Alexander and Grant-Whyte. Among those present were: Meedaines G. Dnwes, M. Keene, Blair, C. Lewis, L. The Kitchener Park Tennis Club, Milford, was officially opened on Saturday afternoon by Mr. G. Malcolm, the president. Mr.. K. B. Hardy, representing the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, congratulated . the club on its 'rapid growth. Afternoon . tea was served by the lady inenibers. Amongst those present were:''Mesdames Malcolm, Cantwell; Haynee, Goodwin, Howe, Clouston, J. C.'.Blomneld, Teasdale, X. S. The Takapuna Tennis Club's courts were officially op,cned on Saturday afternoon by Mr. J.'F. Colgrove, the president, who commented ,on the splendid condition of ttie lawns, which were a credit to the lawn superintendent, Mr. H. Sullivan, who, with Professor J. A, Bartrum, deserved the thanks of the club for their untiring work during the winter. Mr. E. B. Hardy, of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, addressed the members, and Mr. Julius AVilliamson also spoke. There was no . play on account of the recent rain. Afternoon tea was served by the committee and lady members. Amongst those present were: Mesdames J. W. Williamson, J. E. The Papatoetoe public hall, decorated with multi-coloured streamers, bamboo and balloons, presented a gay scene last evening, when a dance was held by the Papatoetoe Combined Sports' Social Club. The dance programme, which included a Monte Carlo won by Miss Donaldson and Mr. C. Docherty, a spot waltz by Mies J. White and Mr. Coutes, a statue waltz by Miss V. Collins and Mr. L. Pinfold, and a eparkle dance, was in the hands of Mr. S. Snelling and Mr. J. Knight. Several extras in the form of old-time dances were played by Mrs. J. Sanderson. A progressive 500 card drive was won by Mrs. J. Knight and Mr. A. Watkins. Among those present were:—Mesdames J. Kidd, R. Henderson, J. Fielder, Bullen, L. Havill, J. Sanderson, H. Collings, A. The women's division of the Farmers' Union held a meeting recently in the Kaitieke board room. Mrs. Coogan presided. Sympathy was extended to members- who had recently suffered bereavements. A report of ,Mrs. Jackson's visit was presented by the secretary. A letter of appreciation was received from the Dominion secretary, and also an invitation from the Piopio branch to their birthday party in October. Two housekeepers were at present in the district; several probationers were also employed, arid many young girls, were found, positions during the jnon'tli. .The rest room arrangements were reported satisfactory, andVthanks were extended to Mrs. Nissen for her assistance. The book club committee reported that eo far only a few bundles of books were received in connection with the annual appeal for the bush library. Parcels of clothing were distributed during the month. Arrangement in connection with,the "Fashion Tea," also a birthday afternoon, were discussed, a suggestion being made that this year a luncheon as well as an afternoon tea should be arranged for the birthday in December. Votes of thanks were passed to donors of books, also birthday cakes.

The Labour Day dance and whist drive, held in the Victoria Hall, at Birkenhead, last evening, under the auspices of the Birkenhead Ex-Service-men's Association, was largely attended, and successful in every way. The committee comprised Mesdames J. W. Canty, E. J. Spencer, J. E. Goulden, R. R. Hayman, E. B. Giliillan, and S. Mills, Messrs. G. B. Chiunery (president), J. Prickett, R. R. Hayman, J. W. Canty (secretary), E. J. Spencer (treasurer), A. Fraeer, J. E. Gouldnn, G. Hingston and J. Prescott. The visitors included Mr. H. J. Aekins, secretary of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association, and Mrs. Aekins. The winners of the prizes for the whist drive were: Mre. Stayte, sen. 1, Mrs. S. Pugh 2; Mr. G. W. Overbury 1, Mr. J. W. Canty 2; consolation, Mra. J. P.'.ltridge and Mr. F. Foster. Others present included Mesdames G. B. Chinnery, F. G. Blackwell, F. Lees, T. Corless, J. Prescott, A. Bland, H. The official closing day of the Otahuhu Golf Club was observed laet Saturday on the Grange links, when a-mixed foursome was played, and in the evening the presentation of trophies won during the season was made by the president, Mr. S. W. Houee, assisted by the ladiee' president, Mrs. A. G. Grinter. A social and dance was arranged by the ladiee' eocial committee, and held in the clubhouse. The ladies' trophies were as follow: —Championship cup, Miss M. Hill; Mrs. A. G. Grinter's trophies for IS and C grade, Mise L. Claudet and Miss CM. Wain; Mies E. Hill, lady captain's trophy for flag match: B grade, Mrs. G. Currie; C grade, Mrs. W. B. Eustace; sealed hole competition for Passenger Transport Company's trophiee: B grade, Miss C. M. Wain; C grade, Mies P. Sutherland; medal round for Miss E. O'Loughlen'e trophy, Mise E. Hill; L.G.U. bronze medal, Miss B. Sheffield; B grade L.G.U. medal rounds, Misees O. Wtiiteley, L. Smith, B. Sheffield, B. Leonard, C. M. Wain, Mesdames G. Cox nnd E. McNeely; C grade L.G.U. medal rounds, Misses E. Katz, L. Claudet, M. Heard, M. Hynes, E. Todd, L. Hunter and B. Leonard; bogey match: B grade, Mies E. Hill; C grade, Mies E. Todd; ladies' foursomce, Misses E. Hill and M. O'Neill; three rounds eclectic: Senior Mrs. K. Chapman; junior, Miss M. Hynes; season's ringer competition, Mrs. G. Cox and Mise O. Whiteley; mixed foursomes; senior, Mrs. McNeely and D. Smith; junior, Miss B. Wylie and A. K. North. The president ' Hlso made a presentation to Miss E. O'Loughlen for holing out in one at the second, and the patron, Mr. R. Wallace, and Mrs. Wallace presented the closing day trophies for the mixed foursomes to Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Eustace. The winners of the Monte Carlo waltz were Miss M. Solomon and Mr. J. Solomon, and the bridge prizes were won by Mrs. Pinfold firet, with Mrs. McKenzie second. During the evening songs were sung by Mrs. Turner, and elocutionary items were given by Miss Louisa Jordain. After supper, a most enjoyable function was concluded with dancing.
