STRUCK WITH BOTTLE.

WOMAN IN TEA SHOP. MAN'S SUDDEN ATTACK. POLICE ARREST SUSPECT. After brutally assaulting a woman in her shop in Symonds Street on Saturday afternoon, a young man escaped by running along a back street and climbing a fence. Mrs. Etliel Mortensen, aged about 40, who has a tea and confectionery shop at 247, Symonds Street, was struck with a lemonade bottle which inflicted a nasty gash on the head, but she recovered after being attended by a doctor, and it was not found necessary to admit Ler to the hospital. She bled so profusely from the wound that pools of blood were left on the floor of the shop. Mrs. Mortensen was standing behind the counter, when a young man entered the shop and commenced to discuss horse racing. He then ordered a cup of tea. While she was in the kitchen preparing the tea. the man, asked her for a piece of paper. She got him a writing pad and then returned to the kitchen. The man followed her into the kitchen, remarking that he had written the names of the racehorses on the piece of paper. According to the statement given by Mrs. Mortensen to the police, the man struck her a violent blow on the head with a lemonade bottle and then grabbed her by the throat as if he were trying to choke her.
