SEA ANCHOR LOST.

BETH'S STORMY TRIP. SHORT STAY AT NORFOIiK* ANCHORAGES UNSUITABLE. Information that the launch Beth lost her sea anchor when storm tossed on her voyage from Auckland to Norfolk Island was brought here by the cargo steamer Hikurangi, which arrived from the island yesterday afternoon. The Hikurangi did not sight the Beth, as the launch left Norfolk Island for Lord Howe Island a week before the steamer's arrival. It was learnt from the islanders, however, that the Beth had experienced a tempestuous passage, and that she had lost her sea anchor. It was also learned that the member* of the crew had had a particularly unenviable time while the launch was hove-to for three days. On arrival at Norfolk Island the Beth first anchored off Kingston, but unfavourable weather caused her to shift to the Cascades, on the opposite side of the island. Mr. T. H. Webb, owner of the launch, made arrangements for a local boat to take the crew ashore, and they were driven over the island in a motor car by Mr. A. E. Martin, one of the leading figures at Norfolk. "The Beth stayed only a day at Norfolk," said a member of the Hikurangi'a company to-day. "Her crew did not like the anchorages offering at Norfolk, and they left for Lord Howe Island with as little delay as possible." The Beth arrived at Lord Howe Island M i/ - '>i;cr 15, after a three-day trip from Norfolk. It was expected that the launch, which left Auckland on September 19, would remain a week at the island in order that the crew might rest. From Lord Howe Island the Beth is to make for the New South Wales coast, and will then be taken by easv stages to Adelaide.
