CHASE IN CITY.

DETECTIVES AND SUSPECT. SEQUEL TO ATTEMPTED BURGLARY. YOUNG MAN REFUSED BAIL. An attempt to break and enter the warehouse of the Fur Trading Company of New Zealand, in Ngapulii Chambers, Lome Street, was made on Saturday evening, but was frustrated by vigilant detectives. As a sequel to the incident on Saturday night, an exciting chase occurred in the city about 5.30 last evening, when a young man, who was sought by detectives, bolted from them, only to be captured 15 minutes later. Detective-Sergeant Doyle and Detectivo Whitehead, the former having a warrant for arrest, were waiting at the corner of Upper Queen Street and Scotia Place about 5 o'clock, when they observed a young man alight from a tram. The detectives approachcd him, but when they were only a few yards away, the man ran swiftly along Scotia Place, with the two officers in pursuit. He disappeared, and Detective-Sergeant Doyle searched the blind end of Scotia Place, while the other detective ran back to the intersection of Queen Street. The man evidently doubled back, for Detective Whitehead saw him run across the grounds surrounding the Church of the Latter Day Saints, and then go up Queen Street and along Karangahape Road.

Detective-Sergeant Doyle joined Detective Whitehead, and both followed the running man into St. Kevin's Arcade and down the long flight of steps leading into Myers Park. There the man again disappeared, but eventually ho was arrested in a house in Scotia Place. Suspect in Court. Alfred Richard Buchanan, aged 20, described as a baker, appeared before .Air. E. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning, charged with attempting to break and enter the warehouse of the Fur Trading Company of New Zealand, with intent to commit a crime. Detective-Sergeant Kelly, in obtaining a week's remand, said there were one or two other men who had yet to be interviewed in connection with the matter. / Mr. J. J. Sullivan, who represented Buchanan, asked that bail be allowed. '"I oppose the granting of bail," said Detective-Sergeant Kelly. "This man was chased by detectives round the town and over back fences before they caught him." The magistrate refused to allow bail, -;o Buchanan was remanded in custodv.
