YACHTING.
FIRST RACE OF SEASON. The first race of the 1932-33 yachting season took., place on Saturday, when _ the Richmond Cruising Club held a handicap event to Islington Bay. There was a hard two-reef westerly breeze blowing and only four out of 13 entries came to the line. The starters were : Nomad (H. Townsend), scr : Drone (L. Mills), scr; Avro (\V. Woodward), 3.0, and Clio (B. Bailey), 16.0. Clio. Nomad and Avro got away together at gunfire, with Drone a few lengths astern. Nomad and Avro ran down wind od. port gybe, Drone starting on the starboard gybe, but off the King's wharf she came head to wind and changed to the same as the leaders. Clio had bad luck, for shortly after the start she carried away her rudder gudgeon, and although she had a very good chance of a win she was forced to retire. Avro and Nomad had a close race all the way down harbour and across Rangitoto Channel. Drone was now catching them up, the ex-Manukau boat making up for time lost by starting on the wrong gybe. The finishing times were: Nomad, 3h 55m; Drone, 3h 57m ss; Avro, 3h 57m 30s. On corrected time Avro wins, Nomad second and Drone third. Mr. T. L. Thompson was Judge at Islington Bav, Mr. X. Dennes, timekeeper, and Mr. \V. A. * Wilkinson, starter, assisted by Mr. V. Hogan.
