MR. HARRY DOWNES.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, this day. The death is reported of Mr. Harry Downes, of Rata, at the age of 75 years. He was one of the best-known Maoris along the coast, being noted for liis generosity and genuine assistance towards his race. In the early stages of the Ratana movement, Mr. Downes was one of the leading members of the executive, and did his utmost to develop the movement so that it would do some* thiiig of real value for the uplift of his race. It is understood that prior to his death he returned to his original Church, the Brethren sect. Death was due to peritonitis.
» In the year 1783 the East Indiaman Antelope was wrecked on the Pelew Islands. A narrative written by one of the officers (printed by D. Brewman for R. Randall, 1788) states that the inhabitants, who had "never before seen any Europeans . . . stroked our bodies and arms outside the garments, seeming to doubt whether our coverings were not a part of the real body, being totally ignorant of the use of clothes."
