EDEN'S DEBACLE.
When Parnell lost the toss against Eden on Saturday, aud batted for 140, the handful of spectators thought that Eden had done a good thing for themselves by waiting for a drying wicket. But when stumps time crtne, the team winning the toss had lost seven wickets for 63. Vivian took the whole lot at a cost of 21 runs. He ran through the demoralised Eden team like a mower through hay. It was the old story of a cricket rot. ____________ There was a strong
cross - wicket wind, and the left-hander, bowling mainly from the terrace end, used that to advantage. The crease was also wearing, being soft at the outset, and he dropped them just where it would do most good. To speak of his length would be superfluous. It was his day. He bowled IS overs, a good half of which
were maidens. His H. G. Vivian. fourth, besides ylelding no runs, was responsible for three wickets, the victims being Mills, G. L. Weir and L. E. Vivian. A. F. Weir was the only Eden batsman to make anything like a stand. He is at present 2S not out. Whitelaw was the outstanding figure on the Parnell side. His 70 was well deserved, and the result of fine wet weather play. When it is considered that the outfield was as dead ns the proverbial doornail. his score is all the more meritorious. He had to fight for every run. He drew the defence all round the wicket, and some of his leg glides were very pretty as well as effective. L. E. Vivian's fielding in slips was keen. He took two brilliant catches there, having to dive at the ball each time. Scores were :— PARNELL.—First Innings. Hay, c A. F. Weir, b G. L. Weir 0 Whitelaw, c Mills, b Mcßae 70 Stehr, st Maher, b G.
