F. W. Byerley.
Winning the toss against Dacre, Ernie Elorspool had no hesitation in putting the opposition in to bat, for there were distinct bowling possibilities about the wicket. All through the afternoon it gave help to the attack, though this statement does not disparage the very steady bowling of Kerr, Lessing, M. Lyon and Cowie. Kerr showed excellent command of length, and his lowshooter (of the type that dismissed Dacre) was cleverly exploited. Lessing varied his attack cleverly, but it never had the same sting as that of his colleague. Mention has already been made of tlie stand by Byerley and Cowie during tlic closing stages. They "feared no foe, in a failing liffht," and it was a dashing knock. Byerley hitting one six. Saunders bowled cleverly for Shore, and Dacre, taking a turn at the pavilion end, showed strategy in setting his field. He very nearly got Byerley caught at long oft, tempting him very neatly with the type of ball that asks to be hit. Byerley hit all right, but the ball fell a dozen yards short of the fieldsman. However, there'was a touch of real cricket guile in'Dncre's methods, and he should prove a big asset as captain of his side. NORTH SHORE.—First Innings.
