POST AND TELEGRAPH SOCIAL.

The first social function organised by the newly formed Post and Telegraph Women's League was held on Thursday evening last, at the Fabian Club room, and was a brilliant success. The attendance was excellent, and fully representative of all branches of the. service. -In addition to a first-class dance programme, a 500 tournament was conducted, the games being keenly contested. The guests were received'by the president, Mrs. S. Mather, who later addressed the gathering. After thanking all for their attendance, she urged all those eligible to join up and assist the movement. The present was a time for co-operation for the ultimate benefit of all. The chief postmaster, Mr. S. M. Harrison, who was accompanied by Mrs. Harrison, congratulated the Women's League upon their enterprise. "I thixk the idea is a most excellent one,"'he sail, and I am sure that all the lady relatives' of the gentlemen in the service will be greatly benefited by this club.", He recommended non-members to join Tip, and' pointed out that functions such as that provided- helped to break down the little stiffness tlisit is part of the strictly jofficial life. Mr. L. L. Macey, district telegraph engineer, also congratulated the ladies upon the formation of such, a useful organisation. He pointed out how advantage could be taken of the movement to welcome members transferred from other centres, and in assisting them in many ways. He regretted that Mrs. Macey was unable to be present. During the evening Miss E. Meredith provided first-class character sketches, and Mrs. W. T. Anderton excellently rendered two songs. Both artists were very well received. The various prizes were won as follows: Statue dance, Mr. and Mrs. G. Cory; Monte Carlo, Mr. and Mrs. Bowyer ;~600 tournament, Mrs. G. Grey and Mr. Pengelly; consolation prizes, Miss Bartley and Mr. Christian. Amongst those present were: Messrs. Bice, Vennemore and Moore, supervisors of the telegraph operating room, who were accompanied by Mesdames Bice, Vennemore, Moore and Miss-Bice. The success of the function was due to a large extent to the assistance in various ways given by the Fabian Club, the Farmers' Union Trading Co., Messrs. A. Nairn, and the Post and Telegraph Employees' Association.
