A meeting of the Ponsonby Women's Christian Temperance Union was held list week in the Methodist schoolroom, when Miss Read presided. It was a "bring and buy" afternoon. After the report of the recent Auckland district convention was given by Mrs. Burman and Mrs. McArthur, Adanis, the Dominion superintendof Maori work, was the speaker, taking for her subject the work of the W.C.T.U. amongst the Maoris. • * * » An old-time dance and 500 tournament wfts held in the East Tamakl Hall on Wednesday, in aid of the school piano fund. The arrangements were capably carried out by the ladies' committee, consisting of Mesdames M. Crooks, W. Esiiiiigham, J. Queen and F. Finlay: Music was supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Kiddell, Papatoetoe, and extras were played by Mrs. F. Parker and Mr. F. Marriner. The winners of the 500 were Gtiy and Mr. Sherry, while the consolation prizes went to Miss R. Sherry and Mr. H. Ferguson. During the evening a waltzing coflipetition was held. The judges were Messrs. J. Hedge, Otaliuhu, A: Green, Epsom, and W. Godfr&y, Papatoetoe, who awarded the first prize to Mr. C. Owen and Miss E. Watts* Other competitions were won by: La rinka, Mr. and Miss Billipgton; spot waltz, Mr. and Mrs. Billington, sen.; Monte Carlo, Miss P. Cunnold and Mr. Matthews. The draw for the decorated Christmas cake, presented by Mrs; Crooks, resulted in Mr. E. Jeffs 1, Master Alan QUeen 2, and Mr. N. Coglan 3.

A meeting of the Epsom branch of the League of Mothers ."was held oil Thursday. In the absence, of Mrs. F. Wilson, Mrs. T.' H. Macky occupied the chair. A talk was given by Mrs. Haresnape on "Home Nursing." Later Mrs. Haresnape answered various questions. Mrs. Warren gave the thought for the month, and musical Items were rendered by Mesdames Gummer and Uren. The meeting closed with afternoon tea, which was served by Mesdames Clemowj Glover-Clark, Hardley, HayvVood and Hill.

A gathering of the Avon Circle took place at the Academy on Wednesday last, when Mrs- Helen Griffiths presided. An interesting programme was presented of "Folklore, arid Tales of the Sea," most <?f. the items. : Jfeeiug . costumed. Weird Hallowe'en stories, by candleglow, were told by Mrs. Matthews,' Madge Horn, Muriel '-Brown, Joyce Smith, Ethna Cork and Clare Mullins. Mrs. Helen Griffiths contributed an original poem, "The Squire's Bride," and Sir Walter Raleigh's speech OH the English sailor. Nautical poems' and stories by Masefield, New-' bolt tlnd Kipling were rendered by Vera Gee, Pendergrast, Mavis Seed, M. Horn, P. McLaughlin and Daphne Mortensen. A pantomime version of "Lord Ullin's Daughter" was much enjoyed, the parts being enacted by M. Seed, Leila Armitage, D. Mortensen, 13. Cork'and C. Mullins. Ina and Nance Targuse gave two quaint little, plays, "The Victorian Sisters" and- "Tea For Two." Vocal items were /presented by Mrs. Alexander ("Hame o' Mine" and "Chinese Lullaby") and Mr. Wallace Gill ("The Ringers" and "Up From Somerset"). Master James Molloy rendered two violin solos, and Miss Violet Robinson was accompanist. Among those present were: Mesdames Matthews, Alexander, Smith, Nicholls, Grace, Seed and McLaughlin, and Misses Seed, Robinson Targuse (2), J. Smith, V. Gee, Mortensen, Armitage, Muriel Brown, Cork, Pendergrast, W. Gill and J. Malloy.
