LUCIDUS AND SEA RULER. DINELLI PLEASES. For the final gallops of the Avondale candidates yesterday the course proper at Te Awamutu was opened next to the rails. The two-year-olds also made use of thie track. All other fast work was done about 40ft out. On the Rails. Eager Rose had her stable mate Arawa Rose as a companion over five furlongs, which they completed in 1.5. Neither was bustled and Eager Rose carried a big weight. Kanapa was not doing his best over half a mile to occupy 525. This gelding is in good order to contest his engagements. From a standing start Trishna completed a mile in 1.55. He could have improved upon this time. Trishna has been doing some very useful work of late and is in fine fettle. The most pleasing task of the morning was done by Sea Ruler and Lucidus, who were together at the conclusion of six furlongs In 1.15 2-5. This was a very useful gallop and both should acquit themselves creditably at Avondale. The three-year-old Mueketoon —Sibfofd gelding pleased while finishing on terms with Marechal after placing three furlongs behind in 38%5. Although a trifle on the small side, this gelding possesses abundance of pace. Dinelll was allotted half a mile in company with the Gay Shield colt. They were both hitting out strongly at the poet to take 50s. Impasto covered three furlongs at a nice quiet pace in 40s.

The Chief Ruler—Miss Sphinx filly and Master Rex were allotted a three-furlong task, which they completed in 4is. A filly by Musketoon—Archquil placed two furlongs behind in 28%r. A. Cook's trio, Trickling Waters, the General Latour gelding and a King Lu—All Win gelding, were companions over two furlonge in 255. The King Lu gelding infuses plenty of dash into his tasks, and is making good headway. On the Outside. Chateau was allotted a five-furlong journey and although he moved nicely he was not after time. King's Knave had Soloist as a companion over a half mile and they finished on terms in 525. After conceding a good start to hie two companions, Safe Bank and Eriuation, Loombination finished on terms at the end of half a mile in 545.

The folowing trainers and their charges lcavo to-day:—W. Alexander, Eager Rose; A. Cook, Lucid us, Dinelli and Sea Ruler; Goo. Paul, Kanapa and Trishna; A. Rowan, Protomint.

TEST FOR NEW ZEALAND CUP. The Wellington Handicap, for .which the weights have been issued, by Mr. H. Coyle, will provide a good test fo'r New Zealand Cup candidates, for there are fourteen engaged who are also in the big lliccarton event. Last season Admiral Drake won the Mosgiel Handicap, one mile and a quarte_r, at Dunedin, and subsequently annexed tho Wellington Handicap from Little Doubt and Gay Crest. He was beaten in the New Zealand Cug by Spearful, but later came on to Auckland, to win the Auckland Cup. In the Wellington Handicap Gay Crest is top-weight with 9.10, but this weight should not prove prohibitive to him, for in the Autumn Handicap, of similar distance, at Trentham last March be was only beaten by a length by Arikira when carrying 9.13. He has only hadono race this season, and ran well, though he was not placed. Concentrate has no form to his credit for some time and is not too. sound. Vertigern has also disappointed.- Fast Passage, has raced well at Trentham and she has shown winning ability up to a mile and a quarter. She, however, gives every indication pf staying on further. Arikira'tf best performance over a distance is the one previously mentioned, while Ketraet won the Parliamentary Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Trentham in July. Spearful won the New Zealand Cup last - year, ■ .while Minerval, wTio comes from a great' staying family, has been showing splendid form in the south up to a mile and a quarter. Merry. Peel, Korokio, Palm, who won at Otaki last Saturday, Colonel Cygnus, Don Jose and Joie de Vnl complete the list of the New Zealand Cup candidates engaged. The event should help to throw Rome light on the big race at Riccarton if those mentioned go to the post.
